Like many people, I make photographs when I travel. Sometimes I travel in order to make photographs. It is always exciting to visit a place for the first time; there is something new to see around every corner. This can represent a significant challenge photographically speaking due to sensory overload. Under these conditions most of the photographs I make are only fit for the trash bin, and there are lots of those. I am sure that this does not apply to everyone, but I need to spend time in a place before I start to see more clearly how I want to photograph it. This is one reason why photography can be a selfish pursuit. Travelling companions may be ready to move on when all I really want to do is soak in my current surroundings. Some of the images that I find most pleasing were made in places that I am somewhat familiar with.
